Abstract

1457036 PTC resistor SPRAGUE ELECTRIC CO 4 June 1974 [4 June 1973] 24767/74 Heading H1K A resistor package comprises a resistor body 10, e.g. a doped barium titanate PTC body, having two parallel surfaces whose combined area is greater than half the total surface area of the body 10, electrodes 13, 14 in thermal and electrical contact with the entire area of said surfaces, insulating layers 15, 16 in thermal contact with the electrodes 13, 14, a metal housing 21 having a cavity to receive the body 10, one of the insulating layers 15 being in thermal contact with a surface of the housing 21, and means 23, 24 for mounting the housing 21 on and in thermal contact with a flat surface of a device. The other insulating layer 16 or the housing 21 may carry a metal plate 22 for contacting the mounting surface. The electrodes 13, 14 may be reflow soldered to metal films 11, 12 on the resistor body 10 or held thereto by compression using silicone grease containing carbon or silver particles to improve electrical and thermal contact, and the insulating layers 15, 16 are adhesively secured to the electrodes 13, 14, the housing 21 and the plate 22. The electrodes 13, 14 have terminal portions for making press-on connections with a conductor.
