Abstract

1456713 Size for glass fibres OWENSCORNING FIBERGLAS CORP 9 Sept 1974 [19 Oct 1973] 39287/74 Heading C3U [Also in Division D1] A size for glass fibres comprises a cationic starch derivative of a tertiary amine together with a cationic lubricant which is substantially devoid of primary amino groups. The cationic starch derivative preferably contains the cation: where R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are each alkyl, substituted alkyl, alkene, aryl and aralkyl groups and wherein R 1 , R 2 and R 3 together have a total of not more than 22 carbon atoms. The preferred cationic lubricant is bis-[beta-3-(2-heptadecylimidazolyl)ethyl]amine: and the composition may optionally include a nonionic lubricant, a nonionic lubricant emulsifier and a humectant, the nonionic lubricant preferably being an animal, vegetable or mineral wax or gelled oil which is a non-liquid at room temperature.
