1456690 Measuring traffic data electrically TRAFFIC TECHNOLOGY Ltd and D L SWALE 22 May 1975 [27 June 1974] 28605/74 Heading G1N [Also in Division G4] Apparatus for obtaining road traffic data comprises two tribo-electric detectors 10, 11, Fig. 1, located in a road surface, separated by a known distance along the direction of traffic flow, and an inductive loop detector 16, the former giving short duration pulses A, B, Fig. 2, defining the passage of each wheel axle, as shown for a 3-axle vehicle, and the latter giving a long duration pulse P from the time the vehicle enters the loop to the time it leaves. The pulses are processed using gates and clockpulse generators to determine (a) the vehicle speed, by counting clockpulses between the start of the first A pulse and the start of the first B pulse, (b) the number of axles per vehicle, by counting the number of A or B pulses occurring in a P pulse, (c) the distance between successive vehicles by counting clockpulses between the end of one P signal and the start of the next, or between the first A (or B) pulse of one vehicle and the first A (or B) pulse of the next. (d) the length of the wheel base of each vehicle by determining the ratio of the time for successive axles to pass over one detector 10 or 11 to the time for one axle to pass over both detectors 10, 11. (e) the number of vehicles by counting P pulses. In another embodiment the long duration pulses are produced by a monostable triggered by each first axle A pulse.
