Abstract

1456149 Friction clutches AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS Ltd 5 June 1975 [21 June 1974] 27664/74 Heading F2C In a twin-plate friction clutch, having a main presser plate 13 and an intermediate presser plate 14 which rotate with, and are axially movable relative to, a flywheel 11, the axial separation of the two presser plates on release of the clutch is limited by abutment means which are automatically adjustable to compensate for wear of the driven plate 22 between the presser plates. The abutment means comprises a pin 38 having reduced diameter end portions 37 and 42. End portion 37 passes through a longitudinally slit sleeve 36 which is frictionally held in an aperture 35 of intermediate presser plate 14, a head 41 of the pin 38 engaging the end of sleeve 36. The end portion 42 passes through a bore 48 of presser plate 13 and has a washer 46 at its end, the pin having a shoulder 43 abutting the plate 13 when the clutch is engaged and a spring 47 about the pin 38 acting between the presser plates. On disengagement of the clutch, by release levers 26 acting through struts 31 on the presser plate 13 to move it against the bias of clutch-engaging coil springs (not shown), the presser plate 13 moves to take up a clearance 48 between it and the washer 42 before the intermediate presser plate 14 also moves. The abutment of the shoulder 43 and the presser plate 13 when the clutch is re-engaged ensures that the sleeve 36, which abuts another shoulder on the pin 38, is moved within its bore 35 to compensate for any wear of the driven plate 22 and maintain the clearance 48. The spring 47, as well as ensuring the separation of the presser plates 13 and 14 also provides a cushioning of the engagement by lightly engaging the driven plate 21 with the flywheel 11 before the main clutch engaging springs come into effect. The main presser plate 13 is connected to the flywheel by drive straps (not shown) and the intermediate presser plate 14 has lugs 15 engaging in slots of a rim 16 of the flywheel 11.
