Abstract

1456026 Recovering metal values from manganese deep sea nodules KENNECOTT COPPER CORP 22 Nov 1973 [1 Dec 1972] 54205/73 Heading C1A Copper, nickel, cobalt and molybdenum are recovered from manganese deep sea nodules by grinding the nodules, leaching with an ammoniacal leach solution containing Cu<SP>+</SP>, and separating the solution containing Cu, Ni, Co and Mo from the nodule residue, which may be washed with ammoniacal ammonium carbonate solution which may then be added to the pregnant leach solution. The leach solution is maintained alkaline, e.g. with CO 2 or lime. The Cu<SP>+</SP> may be provided by dissolving a cuprous salt or oxide in aqueous ammoniacal solution, or by dissolving cupric compounds and reducing, e.g. with a reducing gas such as CO. In various described embodiments, (a) CO absorption, (b) reduction of Cu<SP>2+</SP> to Cu<SP>+</SP>, and (c) nodule leaching takes place in a single vessel; (a) and (b) take place in one vessel and (c) in a second; and (a), (b) and (c) take place in separate vessels. The processes are preferably continuous.
