Abstract
1455951 Making drill bit cutters HUGHES TOOL CO 17 May 1974 [10 Aug 1973] 22080/74 Heading B3A [Also in Divisions C7 and E1] A method of manufacturing steel rotatable cutters for earth boring drill bits comprises forming a cutter with exterior earth disintegrating teeth carburizing at least selected areas of the exterior of the cutter to form a carburized case, boronizing the carburized case, and heat treating the carburized case. The heat treating comprises hardening and tempering the teeth. A drill bit 11, Fig. 1, has a threaded shank 13, nozzles 15 and head sections 17 each supporting a rotatable cutter 19. Alternatively, a conical cutter 19 may be mounted on the head section via a bearing pin 35, Fig. 3, and has teeth 25, 31, and a spear point 33. The carburizing may be by gas, pack or liquid and the carburization is for 19 hours at 927 C. The boronizing process may also be performed by pack, gas or liquid methods at temperatures of 700 to 900 C. for times of 15 minutes to 36 hours. The hardening comprises quenching in oil from at least 755 C. or quenching in carburizing or reducing atmospheres from a temperature of 780-843 C. Tempering is effected at 143-266 C. for about an hour. Decarburization or oxidation of the boronized case may be prevented by using a carburizing or reducing atmosphere, or by using a coating, e.g. copper plating. An alternative form of cutter, Fig. 4 (not shown), comprises rows of wear resistant inserts, preferably formed of cemented WC with a cobalt binder, having an interference fit in holes drilled in the cone 19.
