Abstract

1455872 Making cutting nozzles BOC INTERNATIONAL Ltd 28 May 1974 [25 May 1973] 25111/73 Heading B3A [Also in Divisions C7 and F4] In a metal cutting nozzle having pre-heating gas passages 14 encircling a central cutting oxygen passage 8, at least part of the wall of each gas passage 14 consists of electrodeposited metal. In one embodiment, the nozzle is made by electroplating copper 10 on the outer surface of a former 2 having a central passage 8, which forms the cutting oxygen passage 8 in the finished nozzle, and on the exposed surfaces of cores 6 positioned in grooves in the outer surface of the former 2. The passage 8 is plugged during the electroplating operation to prevent deposition of copper thereon. After a sufficient thickness of copper has been formed Fig. 5, the cores 6 are removed to leave gas passages 14 and the copper deposit 10 is machined to form a right cylindrical outer surface and frusto-conical seating faces 16, 18, 20. Passages 22 are formed by drilling to communicate the gas passages 14 with the gas supply when the nozzle is seated in a holder. The end of the nozzle is swaged whilst removable members are positioned in the gas passages 8, 14 to reduce the diameter of the nozzle and alter the shape of the passages 14 (Fig. 7, not shown). In another embodiment (Fig. 8, not shown), the nozzle is made by electrodepositing copper on a core (24) adapted to form the central oxygen passage 8 and cores (26) provided with sprues (28) adapted to form the preheating gas passages 14 and communicating passages 22. The cores 24, 26 are made of wax or plastics, loaded with graphite or metal powder or provided with a surface layer of metal, and are positioned between supports (30) acting as electrical terminals. After removing the cores 24, 26 by heat the outer surface of the electrodeposited copper is finally machined to the desired shape (Fig. 7, not shown).
