Abstract

1455822 Television; pulse modulation BRITISH BROADCASTING CORP 20 March 1974 [23 May 1973] 24667/73 Headings H4F and H4L The sampling rate of television or sound signal in pulse form is altered by (a) interpolating between input samples to provide samples having the required information content for the output samples, and (b) re-timing the samples to provide the correct timing for the output samples, the steps (a) and (b) being carried out in either order or simultaneously. The signals may be digital (e.g. PCM) signals or signals comprising analogue samples. Conversion between a sampling rate of 32 KHz for radio sound and 31À32 KHz for television sound, and between television video sampling rates of 851 times line frequency and 3 times PAL colour subcarrier frequency are referred to. The latter conversion is described for a 625/50 PAL signal in which it is possible to reduce the required number of interpolation coefficients from 1À6 x 10<SP>6</SP> to 2,304 by changing the interpolation coefficients only between lines, and to further reduce the number to 4 by ignoring the 25 Hz offset during active fields.
