1455594 Working up nitration mixtures BASF AG 4 April 1974 [6 April 1973] 14919/74 Heading C2C The invention comprises a process for working up a reaction mixture obtained by nitration of an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic ketone in the presence or absence of the corresponding alcohol, with at least 95% w./w. nitric acid in the presence of an inert organic solvent for the organic compounds wherein the reaction mixture is diluted with water so as to produce 10 to 70% w./w. nitric acid content prior to separation of the organic phase, and the separated aqueous phase is extracted with an inert organic solvent. Working up is advantageously carried out at a temperature of less than 50‹ C. The process may use water containing inorganic salts, inert under the reaction conditions.
