Abstract

1455164 Drying BELOIT CORP 4 March 1974 [22 March 1973] 9683/74 Heading F4G An extended-nip press for removing water from a travelling web has at least one of the pressing surfaces defined by an endless belt which is urged towards an opposing pressing surface at the nip by fluid under pressure in a chamber of a backing shoe having a flexible side around the chamber and means for preventing distortion of the side by the fluid pressure. In the embodiment disclosed, both pressing surfaces are defined by belts and in one case each belt has a backing shoe 40, with a rubber sill 42 which has blind passages 45, 46 and which is restrained against outward movement by a perforated rubber sheet 43. The surface of the sill adjacent the belt has a PTFE facing 47 including integral stiffening ribs 49 embedded in the sill. In another case, each sill has a metal facing with stiffening ribs and in a further case stiffening ribs span two sides of the sill and are embedded in those sides of the sill and in the reinforcing sheet. In Fig. 10, the sill includes a relatively thick base portion 72 with a facing 73 and a reinforcing sheet 74, and a relatively thin arcuate portion 71 for clamping to the main body of the shoe. In Figs. 12 and 13, conduits 81 extend through the base portion 84 of the sill from a high pressure supply pipe 89 to supply fluid to the gaps between the sill and the belt control the thickness of the gap. The conduits 81 may alternatively communicate with the chamber 82 defined by the sill. The beams supporting the shoes may include fluid backing chambers as disclosed in Specification 1,370,472.
