Abstract

1455115 Torsion bar suspensions RUBERY OWEN & CO Ltd 29 Nov 1973 [1 Dec 1972] 55568/72 Heading B7D A trailer suspension comprises a torsion bar 3 connected at one end by a clamp 5 to a frame cross member or axle member 1 and at the other end by a clamp 6 to an arm 4 adapted to carry a road wheel, the stiffness of the bar being such that bending deflection under load is not such as to affect the normal functioning of the bar in torsion. The torsion bar 3 is formed by a stack of spring-steel leaves secured together adjacent each end of the bar by bolts (not shown). Each clamp 5, 6 comprises two parts secured together by screws 7, one part being welded to the axle member 1 or arm 4. Packing members may be accommodated with the leaves in the clamps 5, 6 so that the same clamps can be used with torsion bars which incorporate different numbers of leaves to suit different loads. The effective length of the torsion bar 3 is preferably less than its width, and the bar may be mounted with its longitudinal axis inclined from the horizontal.
