Abstract

1455093 Magnetic separators ASEA AB 25 March 1974 [26 March 1973 21 Sept 1973] 13100/74 Heading B2J A magnetic separator comprises a rotatable shaft 2a upon which are mounted in spaced relationship a plurality of discs 1 embodying permanent magnets, the unit being arranged in a container 6 through which flows a liquid medium containing magnetic particles for removal; and a plurality of endless belts (12) Fig. 2 (not shown) which extend between a roller (13) located beyond the periphery of the discs 1, and the shaft 2a, the belts entering the respective gaps 9 between the discs where they function both to scrape off particulate material adhering to the discs and to transport this material to a collecting container (15). The shaft 2a may be driven by a motor 4, or by the belts (12) which would themselves then be driven. Each disc may comprise two walls, e.g. of stainless steel, aluminium or plastics material, between which are arranged a plurality of magnets e.g. of barium or strontium ferrite or of samarium-cobalt, (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown). Alternatively, the disc may comprise a central support, e.g. of aluminium, steel or glass-fibrereinforced plastics material, coated on each face with plastics or rubber bonded magnetic material, e.g. of barium or strontium ferrite with nitrile rubber as the binder, and provided with wear surfaces of rubber or stainless steel (Fig. 6, not shown). The disc may have areas (16) Fig. 3, (not shown) without magnets to facilitate the scraping action of the belts. The magnets may be movable with the discs as exemplified above or may be stationary, with only the disc walls rotating.
