Abstract

1455053 Ultra-violet irradiation apparatus THERMOGENICS OF NEW YORK Inc 26 April 1974 18275/74 Heading H5R An apparatus for carrying ink on a moving web 13 comprises a housing 10 within which are lamp assemblies 14, 15, 16, 17 each comprising an ultra-violet lamp 37 and a reflector 30 and the assemblies are rotatably mounted so that the light can be directed on to the web 13 as shown or, by rotating the assemblies through 90 degrees, Fig. 4 (not shown) on to radiation absorbing bodies 47, this being done to prevent scorching of the web if its speed is reduced or stopped, and the housing is provided with blowers which cause air to circulate around the reflectors 30 and the bodies 47 but not the actual lamps 37. The rotation of the lamp assemblies can be automatically controlled by the speed of web 13 and there can be an intermediate condition where the lamps are not rotated but their operating voltage is reduced. In order to prevent cooling air reaching the lamps 37, walls and baffles are provided, 60 to 69, those touching the rotating lamp assemblies being flexible. Fig. 2 (not shown) illustrates a hydraulic mechanism for rotating all the lamp assemblies.
