1454764 Film cartridges CIBA-GEIGY AG 25 Oct 1974 [2 Nov 1973] 50928/73 Heading B8M The unreeling of a length of reeled film 6 on a rotatable central core 9 encased in a cartridge 1 having two side walls 2, 3 which cover the reeled film, is prevented by sealing a strip 14 of flexible material over a central hole 12 in at least one side wall 2 of the cartridge and over a flat end of the core 9 or over a separable insert 10 which engages with the core 9 and which has a flat end 11 thereto, the flat end 11 being exposed through the hole 12 so that it is substantially coplanar with the wall 2, thus disabling the core 9 from rotating whilst the strip is in position. By substantially coplanar is meant that the flat end 11 is coplanar with the wall 2 or is proud to an extent of up to 0À040 inches or is below the plane of the wall 2 to an extent of up to 0À020 inches. As shown, a light-tight circular film cartridge 1 comprises side walls 2, 3 and a circular peripheral wall 4 having a mouth 5 therein through which the free end of the film 6 may be drawn. An insert 10 is mounted to rotate with the core 9. The strip 14 of cellulose acetate covered with a pressure sensitive adhesive has been pushed firmly over the hole 12 and the flat end 11 of the insert 10 and is sealed to the surrounding area of the wall 2. The core 9 may be freed by peeling off the strip 14 or by cutting around the points a, a 1 . In modifications, (a) instead of pressure sensitive adhesive, a water activated or a heat activated adhesive covering is provided on the strip 14, (b) the sealing side of the strip and the area around the hole 12 are covered with a layer of an impact adhesive and (c) the cartridge 1 and the core 9 or the insert 10 are made of polyethylene, polystyrene or another plastics material to which polyethylene may be heat welded and an uncoated polyethylene strip 14 is heat welded over the hole 12 and the flat end 11.
