Abstract

1453936 Moulding fibre reinforced tubes R H McDONALD H E RUSSELL and P R WELLSTOOD-WHITE 19 Oct 1973 48882/73 Heading B5A A method of moulding a tube or a lining therefor from reinforced plastics material comprises wrapping a cylindrical core with fibrous material, inserting the wrapped core into a tubular mould or tube to be lined, connecting the annular space between the core and the mould or the tube to a source of plastics material and an air exhauster, and drawing the plastics material into the space to fill the space and impregnate the reinforcement, thus forming the tube or tube lining. The air space is evacuated to a vacuum of 5-30 inches Hg, and a sight glass may be provided in the plastics inlet line to show when the mould is full. Where a tube lining is to be fabricated, no release layer is used on the inner surface of the tube but in other cases internal surfaces of the mould are wax polished and coated with polyvinyl alcohol or a self-releasing gel coat. Preferred plastics are thermosetting polyester resins, and the fibrous reinforcement may be of glass, carbon or natural fibres.
