1453911 1,2,6 - Trimethyltricyclo[5,3,2,0<SP>2,7</SP>]- dodec-5-ene TAKASAGO PERFUMERY CO Ltd 24 Dec 1974 [27 Dec 1973 6 Sept 1974] 55792/74 Heading C5E 1,2,6 - Trimethyltricyclo[5,3,2,0<SP>2,7</SP>]dodec - 5- ene having the general Formula (I) is claimed per se. The cis decalin form may be prepared from 1,5,9-trimethylcyclododecatriene- 1,5,9 and the trans decalin form from 1,5,10- trimethylcyclododecatriene-1,5,9 by intramolecular ring closure in the presence of an acid catalyst, such as H 2 SO 4 , H 3 PO 4 , polyphosphoric benzene sulphonic or p-toluene sulphonic acids, a strong acid ion-exchange resin, BF 3 , SnCl 4 , AlCl 3 or TiCl 4 . The reaction may be carried out at 0-100‹ C. in the presence of a solvent such as formic acid, acetic acid, methanol, ethanol, CH 2 Cl 2 , CHCl 3 , CCl 4 , n-hexane, benzene and/or toluene. The starting materials may be prepared by trimerizing isoprene in the presence of Ni naphthenate, triphenylphosphite and Et 3 Al.
