Abstract

1453456 Catalytic converter for engine exhaust gases TOYOTA CHUO KENKYUSHO KK 14 Nov 1973 [14 Nov 1972] 52937/73 Headings B1E and B1F [Also in Division C1] A converter for use in purifying exhaust gas is comprised of (a) an ammonia-producing producing layer (APL) consisting of a catalyst which reduces nitrogen oxide present in exhaust gas to ammonia, (b) an ammonia-decomposing layer (ADL) consisting of a catalyst which decomposes ammonia to nitrogen and hydrogen and (c) means for directing a flow of exhaust gas, first through the APL and then through the ADL. The converter may also include (d) a nitrogen oxide-converting layer (NCL) consisting of a catalyst which converts nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas into nitrogen and oxygen, (e) an atmosphere-adjusting layer (AAL) which increases or decreases the oxygen content of the exhaust gas to make it slightly reductive and (f) an oxidising layer (OL) which comprises a catalyst to oxidise inflammable components in the exhaust gas. The exhaust gas may be passed through the various layers in the following combinations: (1) -> APL -> ADL (2) -> NCL -> APL -> ADL (3) -> AAL ->APL -> ADL (4) -> APL -> AAL ->ADL (5) -> OL ->AAL ->APL -> ADL (6) -> OL ->APL -> AAL ->ADL (7) ->AAL ->NCL ->APL ->ADL (8) -> OL ->AAL ->NCL -> APL ->ADL The catalysts used in the various layers include the following: APL-Pt, Pt-Rh, Pd, CoO, reduced material derived from CoO or MnO 2 , etc. ADL-sintered NiO, NiO-MgO-CuO, etc. NCL - sintered NiO-MgO-CuO, etc. AAL - sintered CuO, etc. OL - MnO 2 -CoO, etc. The converter may comprise (a) a cylinder containing a series of porous plates which divide the cylinder into a series of axially-disposed compartments or (b) a series of cylinder pieces equipped with porous end plates linked together end-to-end whereby a multi chamber catalyst converter is formed.
