Abstract

1453302 Waste gas burners JOHN ZINK CO 19 Oct 1973 48873/73 Heading F4T A flare stack has one or more burner areas 1- 6 located in the lower half of the stack, each burner area comprising an opening 18 within which is located one or more burner nozzles each comprising a waste-gas supply conduit 24 having a central outlet 25 and a plurality of outlets 27 formed in a frusto-conical portion of the nozzle for directing some of the gas towards a perforated baffle plate 30 positioned downstream of the conduit. A screen 36 to abate noise and sight of the flame may surround the lower part of the stack or alternatively each burner area may be individually screened by adjustable louvres. The burner areas are brought into operation sequentially as the waste gas pressure increases, the number of areas in operation at a given time being sufficient to ensure complete combustion of the gas. Initially steam for purging and then the waste gas is fed to burner area 1. When gas pressure reaches a predetermined value sensed by switch 1L steam valve 7 is opened to allow steam to pass to burner area 2. When gas pressure reaches a second higher predetermined value sensed by switch 1H gas valve 8 is opened to allow gas to flow to burner area 2. Burner areas 3-6 are brought into operation sequentially on further increase in gas pressure. The stack may be used in combination with a further more elevated flare stack, the gas flowing initially to stack 1 through a first water seal and when gas pressure is sufficient to blow a second greater water-seal flowing to the elevated stack. Flow of steam to the top of the elevated stack is initiated when gas flow to the elevated stack commences.
