Abstract

1453033 Treating emulsions BOC INTERNATIONAL Ltd 12 Nov 1973 [15 Nov 1972] 52698/72 Heading BIB [Also in Division C5] A process for treating an aqueous emulsion containing an organic material (e.g. tall oil) comprises (a) heating the emulsion (e.g. to 30-80‹C), (b) mixing a polyelectrolyte with the emulsion, (c) coalescing the emulsion to form an aqueous and an organic layer, (d) separating as a first stream, the organic layer together with an adjacent portion of the aqueous layer and, as a second stream, the remainder of the aqueous layer, (e) settling the first stream to produce an organic layer and an aqueous layer which aqueous layer is recycled to a step prior to (c), and (f) evaporating at least 5% by vol. of the second stream and using the produced steam as a heat source or in steam distillation. The polyelectrolyte may be a polyquaternary ammonium salt of an acylated polyalkanolamine, a cationic polyamide or a quaternised polyamide. The coalescing material be polyethylene, polypropylene, perlite or diatomite. The evaporation may be effected by contact with steam.
