Abstract

1452964 Forming bonded yarns HOLLANDSE SIGNAALAPPARATEN BV 12 Oct 1973 [19 Oct 1972] 47897/73 Headings DIF and D1W In the manufacture of bonded yarn, an initial fibre ribbon which includes a fibre component for effecting the bonding is drafted to thinner form which is then brought into contact with a heated surface for a period sufficient to complete activation of the bonding component and to dry the ribbon. The drafted ribbon may be false-twisted (if yarn having little or no twist is to be formed) and wetted and/or preheated (to initiate activation of the bonding fibre) e.g. by hot water, before contacting the heated surface. The final yarn may be formed by "open end" spining and "self-twist" methods. The bonding fibre may be expandable, gelatinisable or soluble in water e.g. unstabilised polyvinyl alcohol or alginate fibres, or soluble in mixtures of water and solvents e.g. acetone, formic acid, acetic acid, such as di- and tri-acetate fibres, or meltable fibres such as polyamides or polyolefines (melting under a relatively low temperature). As shown: a prepared roving 1 (which contains the fibre bonding component) drawn from package 2 passes around guides 3 to serrated and rubber, back and front drafting rollers 4, 5, and 6, 7. The emerging ribbon 8 is fed through, and is strengthened by the action of, a false-twisting element 10, thence to a heater 11 comprising a drum 12 driven by wheel 13, a grooved ribbon guide and separating roller 14, further drive wheels 15 and 16 and drive release mechanism 17. The running ribbon winds several turns around the combination of drum and roller 14 to emerge as bonded yarn which is wound into a package 19 by a device 18. Drum 12 which may be coated with polytetrafluoroethylene, is heated as by a burner 12; its peripheral speed is generally maintained slightly (2-3%) in excess of that of roller 6.
