Abstract

1452454 Coking process WAAGNER-BIRO AG 23 Jan 1975 [23 Jan 1974] 3081/75 Heading C5E A method of operating a coke plant comprises (a) circulating an inert gas (defined) in a closed circuit 2 comprising conduits 5, 15, 41, 52, 55, 56, 58 and 60, wherein the inert gas passes through a bed of hot coke, which has been discharged from a coke oven, in bunker 1 to heat up the inert gas, (b) introducing wet coal, which is to be coked, into the circuit 2 at coal drying means 50 in order to both dry and warm the coal, (c) removing the coal from 2 in cyclones 14, 18 and feeding it via conveyers 13, 16 to coal bins 17 from whence it is fed to a coke oven via a larry car installation 36, (d) drying the inert gas in a refrigeration cooler/dryer 6 to remove water taken up from the wet coal and (e) returning the dry inert gas to the bunker 1 to be recycled. The inert gas is preferably N 2 or a mixture of CO 2 and N 2 . The coal drying means preferably consists of two stages 2 and 3, with classifiers 53, 54 to remove oversize, a mill 19 to crush this and feed it back to the main coal bulk. Steam may be generated in plant 9 using the high temperature of the inert gas. A scrubber and condenser 20 is provided upstream of 6 to preclean the inert gas. A cyclone separator 10 is provided just downstream of the bunker to remove coke dust from the inert gas stream.
