Abstract

1452089 Tubular heat exchangers SVENSKA MASKINVERKEN AB 16 Nov 1973 [16 Jan 1973] 53322/73 Heading F4S In a countercurrent heat exchanger comprising a cylindrical casing 1 through which a medium to be heated, e.g. oil, is passed and is heated by a vapour medium, e.g. steam, flowing through a plurality of helical tubes 2, heating medium is withdrawn from the tubes 2 in the form of condensate via a collection chamber 4 and an outlet 7. The operating conditions of the heat exchanger are such that condensate completely fills that portion 10 of the tubes immediately upstream of the collecting chamber 4, the cross section of each helical tube 2 in the region 10 being flattened with respect to the circular shape of the remainder of the tubes, with the condensate being cooled as it passes along the tubes in region 10 before discharging into chamber 4. Vapour is supplied to the inlet end of the tubes 2 via a central inlet 5 and distribution chamber 3; medium to be heated enters the casing 1 through inlet 8 and leaves via outlet 9. A throttle valve for adjusting the temperature of the condensate may be positioned downstream of the heat exchanger.
