Abstract

1451331 Coated abrasives 3M UNITED KINGDOM Ltd 22 Aug 1974 [24 Aug 1973] 40310/73 Heading C4V An abrasive sheet material has a backing which comprises a laminate of at least one fibrous sheet and a dimensionally-stable preformed sheet of plastics material, the fibrous sheet being exposed at one face of the laminate, and a cured adhesive bonded to the opposite surface of the laminate, abrasive grains being embedded in the adhesive. The fibrous sheet may be of cellulosic material such as E weight cylinder paper. The plastics material may be a polyester and the sheet may have a thickness of 1-5 mils. In addition to the preformed plastics sheet a plastics net may be present which increases the shear strength and tear propagation strength. The plastics material may be bonded to the fibrous sheet by a thermoplastic resin preferably combined with a thermosetting resin. Suitable adhesives are phenolic, phenolicrubber, urethanes, epoxies and acrylics. Particularly preferred are synthetic thermosetting polyurethanes. A second sheet may be disposed between the plastics material and the abrasive material. A thermoset material is again preferred.
