Abstract

1451066 Lamps ASSOCIATED ENG Ltd 14 Feb 1974 [14 Feb 1973] 7329/73 Heading F4R A lamp unit comprises a housing, a light source surrounded by a reflector within the housing, and a light transmitting member disposed in or over the mouth of the housing, the member including a light modulating cell in the form of two transparent sheets with a thin layer of a liquid therebetween which scatters light when the cell is subjected to an electric field above a critical value but does not scatter light otherwise, each sheet having on its inner surface a transparent electrically conductive coating in contact with the liquid to act as an electrode. At least one of the electrodes may be in the form of a plurality of zones which can be separately energized. The liquid layer, which may be 0À05 mm. thick, may consist of nematic liquid crystal material and the electrodes, the zones of which may be separated by a gap of 0À01 inch, may consist of tin oxide. The lamp unit may be a floodlamp, searchlight or vehicle spotlight but is preferably a vehicle headlamp designed to be dimmed progressively according to a predetermined sequence either manually or under the control of a photodetector energized by the lamps of an oncoming vehicle.
