Abstract

1451023 Coating fabrics FIBERWOVEN CORP 2 Oct 1974 [3 Oct 1973] 42773/74 Heading B2E A fabric is coated by a method comprising (a) providing the fabric with a face surface having a plurality of upper surface fibres and further fibres wherein a relatively short segment of each of the further fibres protrudes and upstands from the body of the fabric, and another segment of each of the further fibres is rooted and bound in the body of the fabric; (b) causing relative movement between the fabric and at least one blade in contact with the surface of the fabric; (c) applying a settable viscous liquid to the surface of the fabric prior to the point of contact between the surface and the blade, the point of application and the rate of movement of the fabric being adjusted so that the viscous liquid does not substantially penetrate into the body of the fabric; (d) applying a pressure to the surface of the fabric by the blade sufficient to mechanically work the upstanding fibres and to cause the viscous liquid only to coat surfaces of these fibres and of the upper surface fibres and to remove excess liquid from the fabric; and (e) setting the viscous liquid while pressing the face surface. Apparatus for producing such a coated fabric, and comprising means for effecting each of the above steps (a)-(e), is also claimed. The fabric may be a knitted, woven or non-woven fabric and may be needled and/or adhesively bonded. The upstanding fibres may be provided by cutting, sanding or buffing of the fabric. The coating material may be polyurethane, PVC, epoxy resin, polyethylene, polypropylene, polycarbonate, polyacrylate, nylon or polyester. In Examples, a polyester mat is impregnated with a natural rubber latex, sanded coated with polyurethane and then sprayed with a base finish of pigmented acrylate-methacrylic acid copolymer and a top finish of nitrocellulose lacquer. A leather softener may be applied to the finished fabric. The polyurethane coating may also comprise some melamine-formaldehyde or polyester resin.
