Abstract

1450993 Carbonylation catalysts BASF AG 23 Jan 1974 [24 Jan 1973] 3087/74 Heading B1E [Also in Division C2] Catalyst compositions comprising cobalt, free or combined bromine and/or iodine and at least one of the metals palladium, platinum, iridium, ruthenium and copper optionally in combined form are used for the preparation of acetic acid or mixtures thereof with methyl acetate by reaction of methanol and carbon monoxide. The cobalt may be in metallic form or as inorganic or organic salt or as carbonyl complexes. The additional metals may be as salts e.g. halides. The bromine or iodine may be in elementary or ionic form e.g. iodides or bromides. The catalyst may be precipitated on to a conventional catalyst such as silica gel, carbon or pumice. Examples describe the use of cobalt acetate with bistriphenylphosphine palladium dichloride, and other halides.
