1450862 6-Triazolyl-2<SP>1</SP>-benzofurans BASF AG 29 Jan 1974 [30 Jan 1973] 03970/74 Heading C2C [Also in Division C4] Novel 6-triazolyl-2<SP>1</SP>-benzofurans having the general formula where R, R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> each denote hydrogen, chloro, bromo, cyano, carboxyl, a sulphonic acid group, phenylsulphonyl, alkyl, alkoxy, carbalkoxy, alkylsulphonyl, alkoxysulphonyl having 1 to 5 carbon atoms per alkyl group, and carbonamide or sulphonamide which may be mono- or disubstituted by alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, #-hydroxy-alkyl of 2 to 4 carbon atoms or #-carbalkoxyalkyl of 4 to 9 carbon atoms, in the case of disubstitution both substituents being able via the amide nitrogen to form a ring, R<SP>2</SP> denotes hydrogen, alkyl of 1 to 5 carbon atoms, or phenyl, and A denotes the remaining members of a phenylene, naphthylene or acenaphthylene radical which may be substituted and which is free from nitro groups, are prepared by subjecting a compound of the formula to oxidative ring-closure. The novel compounds may be used as optical brighteners for polymeric compounds.
