Abstract

1450446 Textile - treating compositions UNITED MERCHANTS & MFRS Inc 5 Dec 1973 [13 Dec 1972] 56450/73 Heading C3R [Also in Divisions D1-D2] A composition for rendering cellulosic fabrics fire-retardant, comprises an aqueous solution or emulsion containing an aminoplast resin, an acid having a first hydrogen acid dissociation constant in the range from 1 Î 10<SP>-1</SP> to 5 Î 10<SP>-5</SP>, and a dialkyl phosphono-methylol alkylamide having the Formula I wherein R is alkyl (1-6C) and X is an integer from 1 to 3. The aminoplast resin may be in the water-soluble or colloidal state and is preferably a methylated trimethylol melamine. The acid is preferably phosphoric acid, but may be formic, acetic, chloracetic, cyanoacetic, oxalic, malonic, tartaric, phthalic, or benzenesulphonic acid. The solution may further contain 1-3% by weight of urea, ethylene urea, propylene urea, guanidine, dicyandiamide, oxamide, thiourea or polyethylene imine. The polymerization of the resin on a cellulosic fabric may be carried out under steam and/or under pressure. Curing may be effected at elevated temperatures from 300-400‹ F. for 2 to 20 minutes, after air drying the fabric at temperatures in the range of 240-290‹ F. The cured fabric may be subjected to a peroxidation step, e.g. using alkaline perborate, optionally preceded by an alkaline aqueous wash. The fabric is then rinsed and dried. The fabrics treated may comprise fibres of cotton, regenerated cellulose, jute, manila, hemp, sisal and ramie, and blends with synthetic fibres, e.g. cotton/polyester (87/13). Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,011,572.
