Abstract

1449753 Nylon hose PARKER HANNIFIN CORP 12 June 1974 26061/74 Heading F2P A hose comprises a nylon core tube 10, reinforced by two nylon strands 13, 14 spirally wrapped in opposite directions around the outer surface of the core tube 10, and in such a way that substantial spaces 15, exist between individual turns of each strand and a nylon sheath 12 fitting snugly over said nylon strands 13, 14, and fused to the core tube 10 in said spaces 15. The strands 13, 14 are in unbonded contact with the core tube 10, the outer sheath 12 and each other so that they can have limited movement relative to the core tube 10, outer sheath 12 and each other. The core tube 10 and sheath 12 are preferably made from Nylon 11 and have similar melting points. The nylon reinforcing strands 13, 14 are preferably made from Nylon 66 which has a substantially higher melting point than Nylon 11. Nylon core tube 10 which has previously been extruded and stored on a reel 20, is passed through a mechanism consisting of two spools 21 and 22 which spirally wrap two nylon reinforcement strands in opposite directions around the core tube which then enters a cross head 23 from which nylon sheath 12 is extruded over the reinforcement 11 and core tube 10 under pressure and at a temperature of 230‹ to 260‹ C. The temperature at which the sheath is extruded is sufficient to soften the core tube material and effect a bond between the sheath 12 and the core tube 10 in the spaces 15 between the reinforcing strands 13, 14. After extrusion of the sheath the hose is cooled by passing through a water bath, passed through a gauging device 25, and marker 26, and then wound upon a storage rack 27. The reinforcing strands 13, 14, having a higher melting point, do not bond to the core tube 10 or the sheath 12 and thus can slip slightly relative to each other the core tube 10 and the sheath 12, when the hose is bent or flexed. In this way excessive tensile stress on the fibres of the reinforcement during such bending or flexing is avoided.
