Abstract

1449607 Over-voltage and over-current protection circuits JOHN DAVIS & SON (DERBY) Ltd 3 Oct 1973 [3 Oct 1972] 45510/72 Heading H2H A power supply circuit is made intrinsically safe, even in a two-fault condition, by means of three clamp circuits, connected across the output and operated in response to excess current. As described, the A.C. supply is rectified at W1 and fed to a series regulator comprising transistors TR1...TR3 which provide 15V at the output CD. In the event of excess output current, the voltage across R5 is sufficient to trigger thyristors SCR1...SCR3 which shunt Zener diodes ZD1, ZD3 across the output so as to reduce the voltage to 8V. This action also turns on transistor TR4 which shunts the reference Zener diode ZD1<SP>1</SP>, so that the transistors TR1...TR3 reduce the output voltage sufficiently to turn off SCR1...SCR3 when the excessive output current has ceased. Zener diodes ZD4, ZD5 provide protection against excessive output voltage.
