Abstract

1449347 Rotary evaporators LIQUID PROCESSING AB 16 Jan 1974 [17 Jan 1973] 02117/74 Heading B1B [Also in Division F4] Apparatus for evaporating a liquid by indirect contact with a heating fluid comprises a frusto-conical rotor body 4 mounted on a central hub 5 for rotation in a vacuum-tight casing 1 via a shaft 6 driven by a motor 7. The rotor body 4 comprises a perforate partition 11 which together with inner and outer walls 12 and 15 define flow and return passages 16 and 13 for the heating fluid which may be a liquid. The upper ends of partition 11 and inner wall 12 are connected to the central hub 5 while the upper end of outer wall 15 is rotatably connected to the casing 1 by a ring seal 18. Flow agitating means in the form of vanes or helically wound wire can be arranged in the flow passage 13. Heating fluid enters the outer rotor passage 16 via a conduit 24 in a sationary connecting header 3 and, leaves the inner rotor passage 13 via a channel 21 in hub 5 and a conduit 19 in header 3. The liquid to be heat treated, e.g. concentrated, distilled or fractionally distilled, enters the casing 1 via an inlet conduit 26 and passes through a preheater coil 27 before being directed onto the upper end of the inner rotor wall 12 via a nozzle 28; the liquid then flows downwardly as a thin film along the wall 12, treated liquid product being collected in a gutter 29 at the lower end of the rotor body. A scoop pipe 31 connected to an outlet 32 removes heat treated liquid from the gutter 29. Vapour given off during heat treatment of the liquid is condensed by means of a cooler 33 in the form of a helically wound pipe. Condensate is collected at the bottom of the casing 1 in a trough 36 having an outlet 37. Vacuum is applied to the casing 1 via a conduit 40 connected to a vacuum pump. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 2 not' shown) the frusto-conical rotor body is disposed with its apex pointing downwardly, the heat treated liquid in this case flowing upwardly along the inner wall (12) by centrifugal action. The heating fluid may be a vapour. The heat exchange surface (12) can be cleaned at the end of the treatment by introducing a washing and flushing liquid through the inlet (26).
