Abstract
1449081 Surgical suction device AESCULAP-WERKE AG 29 April 1974 [15 May 1973] 18776/74 Heading A5R A surgical instrument comprises a hollow shaft 10 made of an electrically insulating material for removing liquids and/or tissue from the operation area, having at its free end a suction port 11 and at its other end a connection member 13 for attachment to a source of suction, and an electrode 21 for coagulating tissue, positioned at the suction port and connected by an insulated lead 17 to a source of high frequency current, the lead being positioned out of the channel and being disposed lengthwise of and connected to the shaft. The shaft 10 fits into a handle 12 which has a channel 15 connecting the shaft with the member 13. A ventilating opening 16 in handle 12 terminates in channel 15 and may be closed off by the thumb of the operator during use of the instrument. The electrode 21 may comprise a part 22 extending along the outside of the shaft and a portion extending partway across the port 11 thereby decreasing its effective cross-section e.g. an annular section 21, a cresent 121 Fig. 5 (not shown), or a lug 221 Fig. 6 (not shown). Electric lead 17 butts against shaft 10 or is embedded in the, wall of the shaft 10 and extends along the entire length of shaft 10 and along a portion of handle 12 to a part 19 and a plug 24. Lead 17 may be shaped to fit the shaft and may be held against the shaft by an insulating sleeve 23 passing around both the shaft and the lead and thereby strengthening the device. Alternatively the lead may comprise a tube fitting around shaft 10 and having an insulated layer on its outside.
