Abstract

1448901 Making heat exchanger tubing; corrugating; rolling OLIN CORP 2 May 1974 [10 May 1973] 19391/74 Headings B3A B3E and B3M [Also in Division F4] A method of making metallic tubing having formed patterns in or on the tubing wall comprises advancing metallic strip from a supply, forming patterns on at least one surface of the strip during the course of advance, forming recurring variations in, or absence of, the patterns longitudinally of the strip, shaping the patterned strip into tubular form with its side edges in abutment and welding the abutting edges. The pattern, e.g. longitudinal grooves or diamond knurling, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), is formed on one or both surfaces 52, 53 of the strip by profiled rolls 42-48 and one or more patterns may be applied by intermittently engaging the strip with one or both rolls of a pair. Longitudinal corrugations are formed by interengaging rolls, Fig. 6 (not shown), and these also engage the strip intermittently. The edges of the strip are scarfed, bevelled or sheared prior to forming into tubing and when corrugated tubing is formed, the abutting edges are left uncorrugated for welding, preferably by high frequency forge welding, Fig. 8 (not shown). The tubing is cut into lengths and the plain portions, when present, occur either at the ends or in the centres of the lengths. The tubes, which are preferably of steel, stainless steel, aluminium, aluminium alloy, copper, copper alloy, nickel or nickel alloy, may be used in heat exchangers, in constructional applications or for decorative purposes.
