Abstract

1448631 Baling machines C J ANLAS and A J SELLARI 28 Feb 1974 [1 March 1973] 9037/74 Heading B5F [Also in Division E1] A baler for picking up leaves comprises a rotary pick-up brush 17 consisting of "bristles" 34 on bars 31 which also carry plates 35, Fig. 5, substantially covering the spaces between bars. The baler also includes a hopper 19 supplied by the brush 17, reciprocable feeders 48, 49 for moving the leaves from the hopper to a compacting chamber 73 including a ram 77, and a discharge shoot 29 leading from the chamber 73 and having bale tying means (not shown). Apart from the brush 17, feeder 48, shoot 29 and holes 72, 79 in the hopper 19 and chamber 73 to permit escape of air &c. the baler is of known construction for baling hay. The brush 17 is mounted in a housing 15 adjustable about a pivot by a handle (98), Fig. 5 (not shown), to set the height of the brush, the front of the housing being supported by a wheel (14) and a drag apron 18 depending at the rear of the housing. The "bristles" 34 are preferably of metal, their supporting rods 31, as in the known baler, being rotated by a cam (not shown) when they pass the top position of the rotating brush in order to propel leaves on the wood &c. brush-plates 35 into the hopper. The feeder 48 includes an arm 50 carrying bristles 55 and a plate 56 and oscillated by a crank 53 driven by a chain-and-sprocket gear 57, 58. The known rear feeder 49 has tines 71 driven by a crank 70 from a gear-wheel 62, Fig. 1. The hopper 19 has a sloping floor (231), Fig. 4 (not shown). Resistance against which the bales are compressed is produced by wedges 80 on the sides of the shoot 29 at the rear of the compacting chamber. The shoot includes gaps 84 between its floor 83 and sides, a local top plate 86 and a compression rail 85 adjustable, to vary the compression, by nuts 95 bearing on a crossmember 91. A power take-off and clutch assembly 25 to be driven by a tractor drives the brush 17, feeders 48, 49, ram 74 and the bale tying mechanism. Drive for the brush is through a clutch and chain (45), Fig. 2 (not shown). The bale tyer is energized by a star wheel 87 measuring the bale.
