Abstract

1447933 Watermarking paper PORTALS Ltd and A J TOOTH 26 June 1975 [28 May 1974] 23645/74 Heading D2A Paper is watermarked during or after formation using an endless flexible carrier 7, 32 or 51 moving in a non-circular path around spaced axes and carrying embossing and/or shaped projecting attachments, for producing a watermark in paper, the carrier being replaceable by another of different length by adjusting the spacing of the axes. The carrier may be a foraminous bronze wire belt, alone or supported, as in Fig. 6, by another belt, e.g. of plastic mesh in which case the support belt 53 may be correspondingly embossed to prevent the embossing of the belt 51 from being crushed. In a Fourdrinier machine (Fig. 1) the belt 7 may be guided around a driven dandy roll 6, which may contain vacuum and/or over-pressure chambers, and an adjustable roll 8. Alternatively (as in Fig. 5 not shown) the Fourdrinier wire may itself constitute the watermarking carrier. When applied to a cylinder machine (Fig. 4), the belt 32 passes around the surface of the cylinder mould 35 and at least one adjustable roll 33, 34.
