Abstract

1447778 Automatic control of speed INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP 28 Sept 1973 [5 Oct 1972] 45524/73 Heading G3R [Also in Division H2] The speed of a universal (series-wound) motor is controlled by providing a first transistor whose base is connected to a reference voltage source and whose emitter is energized by the motor back e.m.f. to control a second transistor in the firing circuit of a thyristor in the motor armature circuit. In the arrangement shown the base of transistor T 1 is connected to a potentiometer P to tap off a proportion of the reference voltage developed by resistance R4 and Zener diode D 1 connected in series with motor field windings F2, F1 across the supply. The collector of transistor T1 is connected to the firing circuit Z which includes a transistor T2 which acts as a variable impedance to control the charging rate of capacitor C1 used to fire thyristor Th through diac D3. The transistor T1 is thus controlled by the difference between the reference voltage and armature back e.m.f. to change the firing angle of the thyristor and thus control the motor speed to a level set by potentiometer P. The use of a full-wave bridge rectifier to supply the control and firing circuit is disclosed.
