Abstract

1447091 Valves PHILIPS ELECTRICAL & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 13 Sept 1973 43090/73 Heading F2V [Also in Division A5] A pressure relief valve connected to a respirator expiratory tube to produce a positive end expiratory pressure comprises a chamber divided by a diaphragm 3 into compartments 1 and 2, a stopper 6 passing through the diaphragm and closing an outlet 5 from chamber 1 if the pressure A in chamber 2, maintained at at least atmospheric pressure, is greater than the expiratory pressure in chamber 1 provided through inlet 4. The aperture 7 in chamber 2 may be open direct to atmosphere or connected to a separate source of pressurized gas at above atmospheric pressure. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 the stopper is acted upon by a spring loaded plunger 8, the bias of the spring 10 being altered by rotation of calibration lid 15 rigid with a rotatable core 12 having pins 14 engaged in a helical groove.
