Abstract

1446880 Steering valves DANFOSS AS 2 Nov 1973 [2 Nov 1972] 50933/73 Heading B7H In a controller for use in hydraulic steering systems comprising a valve including two cooperable valve sleeves 17, 18, a rotary fluid motor 10 having a rotary member 21, a coupling 20, such as an Oldham coupling, which extends into a cavity 22 in the rotary member 21 and connects it to one of the valve sleeves, 18, the other valve sleeve 17 being connected to a control input element 14 which provides limited relative rotation of the two valve sleeves followed by their common rotation, further comprising an inlet and outlet 2, 4 for connection and return to a source of fluid under pressure and a pair of fluid ports 6, 7, Fig. 10, for connection to the system 8 under control, fluid pressure in the inner valve sleeve 17 serves to effect a seal to prevent leakage from working chambers of the motor 10 into the cavity 22. As seen in Fig. 1 the seal is created at the periphery of a flange 30 provided on part 23 of the coupling. Part 23, also has a radial projection 36, Fig. 9, which engages in matching recesses 37 at the free end face of valve sleeve 18 and in larger recesses 28 at the end face of inner sleeve 17, thus allowing relative rotation of the sleeves 17, 18 limited by the recesses 38. A spring 39 returns both sleeves to their neutral position upon completion of each steering movement. A combination valve 43 has a closure member 44 which operates as a return valve and opens when neutral-position holes 34, Fig. 8, formed in sleeves 17, 18 are throttled, the interior 31 of sleeve 17 communicating with the discharge port 4 only by holes 34 which are gradually closed as the steering shaft 14 is rotated. Sealing flange 30 is pressed against end disc 9 by pump pressure obtaining in pressure chamber 29 so that cavity 22 is sealed off, and if oil leakage from the displacement chambers of the rotary motor 10 passes into cavity 22 the pressure there rises immediately so that no further leakage occurs. If alternatively the cavity 22 is permanently in communication with interior 31 of sleeve 71 then a seal is provided by means of the fluid in chamber 31 which thus prevents leakage from the working chambers of motor 10 into the cavity 22.
