Abstract

1445895 Steering column assemblies CHRYSLER UNITED KINGDOM Ltd 21 Nov 1974 [28 Dec 1973] 59988/73 Heading B7H A steering column assembly comprises a steering column 25, means 18, 19 to support and guide an upper part of the column in a direction oblique to the inclination of the column, which direction, in use, is a fore and aft direction on the vehicle, means 20, 22, 23 for adjusting the column in its fore and aft direction with respect to the support and guide means, and energy absorption means 21 which collapses when an excessive forward load is applied to the upper part of the column. In the illustrated embodiment the adjustment means includes a lead screw 23 rotatable manually or by means of an electric (as shown) or hydraulic, motor 22. The lead screw threadedly engages a bore in one of two trunnions 20 of the steering column which are slidably received in slots 19 provided in transversely spaced plates 18. The trunnion having the screw threaded bore is rotatable about its axis. The energy absorption means 21 is a convoluted tube 21 which will elongate to absorb energy. A tube 24 prevents axial collapse of the tube 21. The lower end of the steering column has a part spherical flange 27 mounted in a part spherical slot to permit pivoting of the column on adjustment of its upper end 15. The slot is provided in a housing 28 which is snap fitted into the toeboard 13. In the event of an excessive forward force and the column not telescoping, the housing 28 will be displaced forwardly out of engagement with the toeboard, and in the event of a force in direction B, the housing 28 will be displaced rearwardly out of engagement with the toeboard. A reduction gear-box may be provided between the motor 22 and lead screw 23.
