Abstract

1445832 Coated product NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 12 July 1973 [14 April 1972] 17230/72 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions ASA and D1P] Fire protection means comprises reticulated plastics material impregnated with intumescent paint. The plastics material may be knitted strands of nylon, or a plastics foam made of polyurethane ether or ester. The intumescent paint may comprise a phosphorus-containing compound, a halogen-containing compound, an ammonium salt, or an oxide of arsenic, antimony, tin, boron, molybdenum, silicone or zinc. Preferably the paint is waterproof. Suitable waterproof paints comprise epoxy resin, a polyamide, and melamine phosphate. Preferably the reticulated plastics material is in the form of balls. Applications mentioned are the use of a block of impregnated foam located within a gas duct and which will normally allow gas to flow freely therethrough, and the placing of the impregnated foam at least partly around an aircraft internal fuel tank.
