Abstract

1445829 Photographic materials and gravure plates produced therefrom IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 27 Sept 1973 [13 Oct 1972] 30769/72 Headings G2C and G2M A photographic material useful for producing gravure printing plates comprises (a) a support transparent to ultraviolet (b) a silver halide emulsion layer optionally containing a developer and (c) a photopolymerizable layer comprising an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, a photoinitiator, and a binder. The binder in layers (b) and (c) is preferably a polyamide but acrylic resins or polyurethanes may be used in layer (c). Lower layer (b) may also contain a polymerizable monomer and either or both layers (b) and (c) may contain dyes. The gravure plate may be produced by (1) imagewise exposure of the material to visible light to produce a latent silver image (2) developing and fixing the latent image (3) exposing the material to ultraviolet light through a gravure screen placed above layer (c) and also through the support and silver image, these exposures being either simultaneous or consecutive, and (d) developing the layer (c) by removing the unexposed areas.
