Abstract
1445678 Catheters; Measuring body fluid pressure SOCIAL SERVICES SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 25 Sept 1973 [30 June 1972] 30763/72 Headings A5K and A5R A catheter having a lumen 51 formed longitudinally therein communicating between the ends of the catheter and contained within a core 52 which is externally star-shaped in transverse cross-section, has electric conductors 53 located longitudinally in the grooves between the points of the star-shaped core and retained in position by an insulating sleeve 54, one or more catheter extensions 59 being attached in end-to-end formation to the catheter, each extension having an electrical sensor, e.g. for detecting gases, for determining blood pressure, or for electro-cardiograph observation, a lumen 60, and electrical conductors 61 mateable with conductors 53. An end-piece 56 carrying electrodes 57 blocks off the catheter lumen. An aperture 55 is provided in the catheter wall to give access to the lumen. The catheter wall may be reinforced by a spirally wound filament.
