Abstract

1445418 Gas generator J WAGNER 26 Sept 1973 [9 Oct 1972] 45066/73 Heading C5E A gas generator for both upward and downward gasification, comprises a housing 59 defining a combustion space 53, a cinder bath space 25 below the combustion space and a space below the cinder bath space, the space below the cinder bath space being in communication with the combustion space; a main pipe 37 leading upwards to the combustion space 53 having an air inlet 44 below a gas outlet 45, the gas outlet, when open, opening into the space below the cinder bath space; means for opening and closing the air inlet; means for opening and closing the gas outlet; air inlet nozzles 62 communicating with the combustion space 53 and cinder bath space 25 respectively; and a serpentine passageway 10 arranged around the housing and in communication with the space below the cinder bath space whereby, in operation during downward gasification, the gas outlet 45 is closed and the air inlet 44 is open to allow air to be drawn by suction through the air inlet and up the main pipe 37 into the combustion space 53 and gas generated in the combustion space flows into the space below the cinder bath space and thence through the serpentine passageway 10 and in operation during upward gasification, the gas outlet 45 is open and the air inlet 44 is closed and air is introduced into the combustion space and the cinder bath space through nozzles 62, gas generated in the combustion space 53 flowing down the main pipe 37 and through the gas outlet 45 into the space below the cinder bath space and thence through the serpentine passageway 10. Main pipe 37 is rotatable and the means for opening and closing air inlet 44 includes a closure member 47 rotatable with and partly closing the lower end of the pipe 37 which closure member co-operates with a stationary closure member 45a provided on a stationary pipe insert and partly closing the lower end of the main pipe, so that in one angular position of the pipe 37 the air inlet is open and in another position the air inlet is closed. The means for opening and closing the air inlet may be operatively connected by crank 48 and rod 49 to the means for opening and closing the gas outlet so that when the gas outlet is open the air inlet is closed and when the gas outlet is closed the air inlet is open. Each nozzle is provided with an electromagnetically controlled flap valve. The nozzles 62 open into combustion space 53 above and adjacent a fuel supporting platform 18. The nozzles may pass through or between gas passages of passageway 10. Pivotable members 22 are mounted on platform 18 forming the bottom of combustion space 53 and are rigidly connected to rotatable main pipe 37. The gas passageway 10 may be constituted by passages some of which extend upwardly from a region surrounding the lower portion of the combustion space 53 and the upper portion of the cinder bath space 25 and some of which project downwardly from that region, the passages projecting upwardly having a different vertical extent to those projecting downwardly. Fragmented coal, waste materials such as decaying wood, wood shavings and dust, peat litter, coal dust, waste oil, comminuted tyres may be processed.
