Abstract

1445216 Workpiece clamping device SOC ANON AUTOMOBILES CITROEN 18 July 1974 [20 July 1973] 31783/74 Heading B3B A clamping device for holding a cylindrical workpiece P, e.g. during machining, comprises a hollow cylindrical body 1 around the inside of which is located a plurality of inflatable, annular, axially-spaced clamping elements 3, separated from one another by axially-fixed rings 4. The radially-inward-facing surface 6 of each ring is partially frusto-conical in form in order to define an annular cavity 5 with an adjacent clamping element 3 and a plurality of clamp ing ring segments 7 is arranged in each of the cavities in sliding contact with surface 6 so that when the clamping elements 3 are connected to a source of fluid under pressure, such as along line 17 in flange 2, recesses 13, 14 in longitudinal element 12, and connection 16, the elements 3 inflate, bear against the workpiece P and move the clamping segments along surfaces 6 into clamping engagement with the workpiece. The segments 7 may have a groove 10 in which lies a split spring retainer ring 9 and a resilient element 11 may be used to return the segments to their original positions.
