Abstract

1444805 Swash-plate engines and compressors M BRILLE 24 July 1973 [25 July 1972 6 June 1973] 35232/73 Headings F1B F1M F1N and F1S An axial piston compressor or hot-air, steam or two or four stroke I.C. engine comprises an input or output rotary shaft 9 having an inclined crank 8 which pivotably receives the pin 7 of a swash-plate 5, 6, pistons (not shown) each connected by a rod 48 to a respective arm 47 on the. swash-plate, and a pair of frusto-conical surfaces 12, 17 on the swash-plate disposed to roll on respective frusto-conical surfaces 14, 19, fixed to a frame 33. The co-operation between the frusto-conical surfaces causes the axis yy' of the swash-plate to move through a conical path having an apex S. Bevel gears 11, 16 concentric with the frusto-conical surfaces 12, 17 mesh with respective bevel gears 13, 18 concentric with the frusto-conical surfaces 14, 19 to prevent slipping between the frusto-conical surfaces. The positions of each surface and its bevel gear may be reversed. The assembly comprising the shaft 9, swash-plate 5, 6 and gears 13, 18 with frusto-conical surfaces 14, 19 is capable of axial movement whereby the fixed stroke of the pistons is shifted axially to vary the compression ratio of the machine. The axial movement of the assembly occurs automatically as the load on the pistons changes. Thus with increasing piston load, the columns 2, 4 carrying the frusto-conical surfaces 12, 19 move to compress a spring 37 in the form of a stack of Belville washers and thereby decrease the compression ratio. The mean value of the compression ratio is determined by a flanged member 38 screwed into the frame 33 so as to vary the degree of compression of the spring 37. Rotation of the member 38 is effected via a shaft 42 having a pinion 41 meshing with a gear 40 on the member 38. To damp the action of the spring 37 liquid is supplied through an inlet 67 to the chamber containing the spring, the liquid discharging at a controlled rate through calibrated orifices 68. The shaft 9 carries a flywheel 62 and a pinion 54 which meshes with a pinion 55 having a shaft 56 for driving, via a gear 57, an oil or fuel pump or ignition distributer (not shown). The shaft 56 passes between the arms 47 and is provided with cams 58 for operating engine valves (not shown) and a gear 60 having a flywheel 63 and a rotor 66 for distributing fuel/air mixture to the engine cylinders. A joint having frusto-conical surfaces and for connecting the piston-rods to the swash-plate is disclosed in Figs. 7 & 9 (not shown). The necessary geometric configuration of the machine parts is described.
