Abstract
1444231 Separation of gases PETROCARBON DEVELOPMENTS Ltd 15 Nov 1973 [22 Nov 1972] 53930/72 Heading B1L A method of separating a gas mixture by pressure swing adsorption comprises treating gas mixtures in an adsorption unit of x zones of adsorbent material, (A B C & D). which selectively absorbs a component of the mixture x being an integer of at least 3 by i) passing 'the gas mixture at a first pressure through a separation section of y zones where y is an integer of 2 to x-1 (A and B); ii) recovering from the last zone of the separation section (B) a purified product gas (PE) which contains a reduced and predetermined quantity of adsorbable gas compared with the initial mixture; iii) before the concentration of the adsorbable comoponent in the product gas rises above the predetermined value but after the concentration leaving the penultimate zone of the separation section (A) has exceeded the predetermined quantity adding another zone (C) to form a new last zone to the separation section (Stage 2) iv) removing the first exhausted zone (A) from the separation section and purging the adsorbent in said removed zone by passing a purge gas PG through it at a lower pressure whereby to regenerate it at or reuse commencing as the last zone of the separation section (Stage 4). If there are more than three zones the regenerated and purged zone may be repressurised (Stage 3) before introduction as the last zone of the separation section.
