1443815 Marking animals VEREINGUNG VOLKSEIGENER BETRIEBE TIERZUCHT 1 Aug 1973 36608/73 Heading A1X Apparatus for tattooing animals consists of a conveying device 3 upon which is mounted a tattooing device 1 and a colouring device 2. The device 1 consists of numbering rollers 6 and a support anvil 5. The numbers on the rollers 6 are in the form of a plurality of tattooing pins 7 in circumferentially spaced groups around the rollers 6. A foot pedal 15 actuates the tattooing device by causing the rollers 6 to be pressed against the support 5 upon which the animals ear is placed. This action additionally causes the rollers to rotate so updating the number tattooed onto the next animal and also causes registration on a data recording device 11. The colouring device 2 has a support 16 with a seal 17 connected by a flexible tube 18 to a container 19 for the fluid. A lever arm 20 is connected via a traction cable 21 to a foot pump 23 communicating in turn via conduit 24 with the support 16. Actuation of the pump 23 creates a pressure differential across the interface of seal 17 and support 16 where the punctured ear of the animal is placed so that colouring fluid is drawn into the perforations completing the tattoo. The colouring device may consist of a hollow sponge (30) Fig. 5 (not shown) being pressed against and rubber across the punctured ear whilst saturated with fluid. The colouring device may further be incorporated in the tattooing device by supplying the latter with a housing (35) Fig. 6 (not shown) which sealingly engages support anvil (45) and forcing fluid' through the housing and anvil interface by means of conduit (49) and (50). The anvil surface and tattoo pins may be arranged to meet at an angle other than 90‹ Fig. 9 (not shown). The numbering rollers may be replaced by interchangeable figure bars (71) Fig. 10 (not shown) when the tattoo is not required to vary between animals. These features may further exist in combination Figs. 11 to 13 (not shown) in a device which comprises a housing containing numbering rollers (78) and a housing containing figure bars (79) these housings are mounted vertically and offset by 90‹ horizontal angle about a vertical guide tube (81) around which they may pivot without relative movement, and data recording means (93) (94). The housings can be optionally pivoted into position between a sealing plate (86) provided on a lever (84) and an anvil support (87) the draw rod (83) may be actuated by foot controls and a vacuum connection (85) draws fluid into the perforations via conduit (92).
