Abstract
1443457 Electron beam apparatus GENERAL ELECTRIC CO Ltd 11 July 1974 [12 July 1973] 33307/73 Heading H1D In a glow discharge electron gun having a series of anodes 2 aligned with a cathode 1, anodes furthest from the cathode 1 are excluded from the glow discharge region by an electron-transmitting window 4 sealed across the beam path. The gun is sealed in a gas-tight metal enclosure with a beam-transmitting window in the wall. Window 4 is of titanium À0005 inch thick, and it divides the enclosure into two paths; the pressures in each part being different such that glow discharge takes place only in the space between cathode 1 and window 4, which may be filled with helium at a pressure of, e.g. 100 milli Torr, the pressure beyond the window being, e.g. 1 milli Torr. The voltages of the anodes are adjusted to give a required potential gradient, with cathode 1 at - 300 kv. and anode 2<SP>1</SP> limited to, say, - 100 kv. This may be modified by the addition of two or three further earth anodes. May be used for ionizing CO 2 in a laser. Window 4 may be alternatively located between two anodes, and is then sealed to the sides of the envelope.
