Abstract
1443421 Cams &c. M V HINDERKS 9 July 1973 [7 April 1972 (2)] 16080/72 and 16081/72 Heading F2K [Also in Division F1] A cam and follower mechanism comprises a rotary cam having a first lobe 4, the radial dimension of which varies along the axis of the cam and at least one other lobe 3. The cam is used to operate the inlet and/or exhaust valve of an I.C. engine, and is arranged to slide axially to vary the valve lift and dwell. The second lobe 3 opens the inlet valve during the compression stroke to allow some of the mixture to escape and thereby vary the maximum compression pressure. At one end of the cam, the lift provided by the lobe 3 decreases to zero, Fig. 2a. The exhaust valve may be timed to be opened by lobe 3 when a negative pressure pulse exists at the exhaust port. Fig. 4 shows a device for moving a cam axially in accordance with engine speed and load. A cam shaft 3a is carried by bearings 6a, 7a and at one end has centrifugal weights 8a, which move shaft 3a to the right as engine speed increases. At the other end of the shaft is a piston 9, subject on one side to atmospheric pressure and on the other side to inlet manifold pressure in chamber 10.
