Abstract
1443122 Electrographic printing MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 19 April 1974 [20 April 1973] 17332/74 Headings B6F B6C A process for electrographic recording comprises providing a first electrode 1, a second electrode 3, dielectric recording medium 17 in contact with electrode 3 and toner 13 between the first electrode 1 and the recording medium 17 forming an electronic circuit connection between the electrodes, establishing a first force 21 attracting the toner to the first electrode, and applying an electrical potential V to the electrodes, the electrical potential V establishing a second force 29 opposed to the first force 21, the force 29 being dependent on (a) the potential difference between the portion 15 of toner contacting the recording medium 17 and the second electrode 3, (b) the capacitance between the portion 15 and the second electrode 3, and (c) the time during which the portion 15 has the opposing forces applied to it. One of the parameters affecting the second force 29 can be varied such that when force 29 exceeds force 21, toner portion 15 remains deposited on the recording medium, whereas when force 29 is less than force 21, the portion 15 remains attracted to the first electrode 1. The first force 21 is magnetic, the toner being magnetically attractable. Embodiments described include: replacing both electrodes 1, 3, by a plurality of switchable electrodes (Fig. 7, not shown); providing each electrode with portions 9, 11 of varying resistivity (Fig. 8, not shown); forming electrode 1 as a cylinder and electrode 3 as a shaped electrode either as alpha-numeric characters or styli (Figs. 9, 10, not shown); forming electrode 3 as a cylinder and electrode 1 as styli, the recording medium being either a separate web, or a temporary surface from which a viewed image can be erased or a temporary image can be transferred to a permanent record medium as by removal on transparent adhesive tape which is laminated to paper (Fig. 15, not shown); forming electrode 1 as a cylinder and electrode 3 as a flat plate having a portion 11 of varying dielectric constant such as photoconductive material image-wise exposed (Fig. 16, not shown); or forming electrode 1 as a cylinder with a coating equivalent to portion 9 of varying resistance thereby varying the potential between toner portion 15 and electrode 3 (Fig. 17, not shown).
